Teeth Whitening
At Power Dental Practice we have been teeth whitening for over 20 years and have seen many advances.
There are 2 main types of teeth whitening systems:
- In chair
- Take home
It has been our experience that for people with moderately discoloured teeth, and younger people, good results can be achieved using either method on its own. We use the Colgate teeth whitening for these cases.
However, the darker the teeth and the older the person, better results come only by using BOTH take home and in chair. For this reason we choose to use Phillips Zoom! whitening in chair and are getting spectacular results. Contact us for more information about tooth whitening.
It is important to note that teeth whitening only whitens tooth enamel and not:
- Any existing fillings
- Crowns
- Roots of your teeth
Take Home systems
For the regular take-home will create custom-made teeth whitening trays, which look like very thin mouth guards and are designed to fit to the contours of your teeth exactly. This ensures that excellent contact is made between the teeth whitening gel and the tooth enamel, enhancing the result.
For younger people we usually supply a day-time gel which is worn in the trays for 30 minutes a day for 10 days
For older people and those with darker teeth we usually recommend two weeks at home overnight with a night-time slow-release gel. Many people will take the 2 weeks to see maximum change, but some people notice a significant improvement after only a few days. Achieving your desired smile will depend on your personal circumstances and colour of your teeth.
We now have a system for those with extra sensitive teeth: Colgate Optic White pro light. This is 10 minute a day system which uses a serum rather than a gel. It is more gentle, but will usually take a little longer.
In Chair system
We choose to use Phillips Zoom! whitening in chair. After isolating the teeth our staff will use a stronger bleaching gel in 4 rounds of 15 minutes activated by the special blue Zoom! LED light. In just 1 hour your teeth can whiten up to 8 shades. Our staff will apply a post-treatment gel to reduce tooth sensitivity. The results have been amazing! Darker Teeth
People whose teeth are darker teeth benefit greatly from an in chair whitening session as well as the 2 weeks at home whitening.
The at home whitening removes stains deeply and gradually, conditioning the teeth gently preparing them for the in-chair procedure. The in chair session is normally one hour using a much stronger solution than the take home version.
Please contact us, or ask your dentist or hygienist at your next dental check-up if you have any more questions about teeth whitening.
Frequently Asked Questions
When it comes to dental whitening, many people assume that all products and procedures are created equal. However, this couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, there are a variety of different whitening options available, each with their own unique benefits and drawbacks.
One of the most common types of dental whitening is over-the-counter whitening products, such as whitening toothpaste, strips, and gels. While these products can be effective at removing surface stains, they often contain lower concentrations of whitening agents and may not be as effective at removing deeper stains.
Another popular option is in-office whitening, which involves a professional dental treatment that uses a high-concentration whitening gel and a special light to accelerate the whitening process. This type of whitening is typically more effective than over-the-counter products and can produce dramatic results in just one visit.
At-home whitening kits are another option, which typically involve custom-fitted trays and a professional-strength whitening gel. While these kits can be effective, they require more time and effort than in-office treatments and may not produce results as quickly.
It's important to note that not all dental whitening products and procedures are safe for everyone. For example, individuals with sensitive teeth or gum disease may not be good candidates for certain types of whitening. It's always best to consult with a dental professional before starting any whitening treatment.
In conclusion, while all dental whitening products and procedures may seem similar, they are not created equal. It's important to consider your individual needs and consult with a dental professional to determine the best whitening option for you. At Power Dental, we offer a variety of whitening options to help you achieve a brighter, more confident smile. Contact us today to schedule a consultation!

Teeth Whitening
If you want to get your teeth whitened, your dentist is the best option—because he or she understands your teeth.
Teeth whitening is a very popular treatment at our clinic and many other dental practices—and we are aware that it is sometimes advertised in non-dental businesses as well. But if you are considering getting your teeth whitened, there are several really good reasons why you should visit a dentist to get it done.
